When worship is authentic, it is a wonderfully mysterious admixture of memory, tradition and present focus on how God is at work in our lives and in the world. It encourages, inspires, agitates and impels us to look at our limitation and God's Unlimited Being. We declare our faithfulness based on His Faithfulness - and we share a unique unity, with God, with one another and with those who have come before us.
I think about this when I hear the gospel songs of my youth and remember the faithfulness and the fervor of those old saints I knew when I was growing up. They weren't perfect, but they were confident that they were perfectly His and they sung these songs with great joy and great passion.
